1976: Anneliese Michel

Anneliese Michel’s story is one of the most harrowing. The young German woman suffered from what her family believed to be demonic possession, though it was likely an undiagnosed brain disorder like epilepsy or schizophrenia. After 67 failed exorcism attempts, Anneliese tragically died from malnutrition in 1976. This case inspired the 2005 film The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Her parents and the priests who conducted the exorcism were convicted of negligent homicide.
