Craving a taste of India after returning home, Lord Sandys of Worcester asked local chemists John Lea and William Perrins to create a sauce resembling what he’d enjoyed abroad. Their initial batch, however, had an unpleasant smell, so they left it in storage. After two years, they rediscovered it, finding that time had improved the flavor, and Worcestershire sauce was born.
